Professional Resumé

PortraitBorn in Rio de Janeiro in 1951. An art critic and historian, he directed the Antônio Parreiras Museum (1973-1976) and the Rio de Janeiro State Historical Museum (1978). He has lectured at the Rio de Janeiro Federal University Fine Arts School (1979-1983) and at the College of Design of Rio de Janeiro State University - UERJ (1985).

The author of five books published on Brazilian art of the 19th century, among them extensive studies of painters Parreiras (1981) and Castagneto (1982), which were awarded prizes by the Brazilian Book Chamber and the National Book Institute; he is also the co-author of four other books. Since 1984 he has been developing an independent research project on major documentary sources for the history of art in Brazil, based heavily on information technology; he received a grant from the Vitae Foundation for this purpose in 1990.

Curator of over thirty exhibitions presented in public and private cultural institutions, he has given some forty lectures in Brazilian universities and museums. He is a former member of the Brazilian Art Critics Association (1973-2003), the Association Internationale des Critiques d’Art (1982-2003), the International Council of Museums and it's Brazilian Committee (1982-2002), having willingly ceased to participate in all of these entities.

Author of five monographic books on Brazilian art, four other co-authored books, and essays and articles published in specialized magazines. Three of his books were distinguished with awards from the Brazilian Book Chamber, São Paulo, SP (1981), the Brazilian Association of Art Critics, Rio de Janeiro, RJ (1981), and the National Book Institute, Brasília, DF (1982). He gave around forty courses and conferences in museums, universities and cultural institutions in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais (1974-2002).

Since 1984, he has been developing a private research project on the main sources for the history of art in Brazil, heavily supported by the use of information technology. In this work he always had the invaluable collaboration of Gláucia Santos Garcia, his assistant between 1988 and 2011.
